Michel-Joseph Maunoury

Michel Joseph Maunoury (* 1847 in Orléans, † April 7, 1923 in Mer, Loir -et- Cher) was a French general and later Marshal of France (posthumous ).

Maunoury was a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique of the final cohort in 1867 and served as an artillery officer. Reactivated in August 1914 at the age of 67 years, he took over command of the 6th Army, which had been set up from the troops of the military district of Paris.

During the Battle of the Marne parts of this army from the commander of the Military District Paris, Joseph Simon Gallieni were cast out with taxis to the front, to halt the German advance on Paris. This event was in the French and Parisian history as the " heroic song of taxis " one. On March 11, 1915 wounded and half-blind, he ended his military career.
