Michelle Perrot

Michelle Perrot ( born May 18, 1928 in Paris ) is a French historian and feminist. She was a professor at the University of Paris VII ( Denis Diderot ) and is primarily concerned with the 19th century, with legal history and women's history.

Originally from the left Catholicism coming she was influenced by the 1968 student movement and Marxism. She received her PhD in the early 1970s with Ernest Labrousse at the Sorbonne about the labor movement ( published as Les ouvriers s grève, Mouton, 1974, translated: Workers on strike ). After that, she was at the University of Paris VII

She did research on prison in the 19th century. 1986-1991 she had with the lawyer Robert Badinter, a seminar on École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales on prisons in the 3rd Republic. They also worked with Michel Foucault. With Georges Duby they were in 1991/92 a five-volume history of women in the West out. With a number of essays and books, she distinguished herself in the 1980s as a leading historian of women's history, a France.

She is a Knight of the Legion of Honour and of the Ordre national du Mérite.

She wrote for Libération and had a regular Monday at France Culture radio show about history.
