December 3, 1965

Michelle is a ballad by the Beatles, which appeared in 1965 on her sixth studio album Rubber Soul.

Formation

Text and composition are mainly written by Paul McCartney, although the piece as to Beatles - times became customary attributed to the team of authors Lennon / McCartney.

To the song whose text is partly in French, McCartney inspired a student who played guitar at a party and to sing a French song. Fascinated by the Paris Bohémienszene which was announced in the early 1960s, Paul McCartney started around September 1965 ( between the U.S. tour in August 1965, the recording sessions for the new album had the Beatles a few weeks vacation) to work on the piece. Since he was the French language only limited powerful, he asked January Vaughan, a French teacher and wife of his former schoolmate Ivan Vaughan, by whom he had John Lennon met to help. This also had the idea to use the name Michelle.

The piece in the usual cast of John Lennon and George Harrison on acoustic guitar, McCartney was recorded on bass and Ringo Starr on drums. Lennon and Harrison sang a background voices. The character played by George Harrison guitar solo in the middle and at the end of the song was written by its own account of producer George Martin. In 1967, the song won a Grammy Award as song of the year.
