Michiel Hazewinkel

Michiel Hazewinkel ( born June 22, 1943) is a Dutch mathematician who is concerned with mathematics and applied algebra.

Hazewinkel studied at the University of Amsterdam Mathematics and Physics (Candidate Exam 1963) and was in 1969 with Frans Oort doctorate ( Abelian extensions of local fields ). He worked as a post-doc 1969/70 at the Steklov Institute in Moscow. In 1970 he became a lecturer ( lecturer ) and 1972 professor at the University of Rotterdam. At the same time he taught from 1973 to 1975 in Antwerp. In 1973 he was at Harvard University. From 1982, he headed the Department of Pure Mathematics and in 1988 the department Algebra, Geometry and Analysis on the CWI in Amsterdam, but still taught until 1985 while continuing in Rotterdam and then at the University of Utrecht. In 1995 he was a visiting professor at the University of Bordeaux I.

1987 to 2002 he was editor of the 13 -volume Encyclopaedia of Mathematics. It came from a Russian encyclopedia. From 1995 he was editor of the Elsevier Handbook of Algebra (9 volumes).

It was in 1986 founder and first president of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry ( ECMI ).
