Michigan Stadium

Michigan Stadium is an American football stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. It is located on the grounds of the University of Michigan and serves as the home venue of the university teams Michigan Wolverines, which is organized in the NCAA. With an official capacity of 109 901 the Michigan Stadium is currently the largest stadium in the United States and the fourth largest stadium in the world. The capacity of the stadium is only slightly below the population of the city in which it is located; 114,000 people live in Ann Arbor.

The games are regularly more than 110,000 spectators in attendance. So 114 804 crowd turnout of 10 September 2011 in a match of the Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which is a record in the recent history of college football.

History

At its opening in 1927, the stadium took only 72,000 spectators. Only in 1949 it was extended to its current capacity. Although since 1975, every game was attended with over 100,000 spectators, the atmosphere in the stadium is considered to be relatively low compared with other college football stadiums.

The first game took place on October 1, 1927 instead of against the Wesleyan Battling Bishops, but the official opening was only on October 22, 1927 in a game against the Ohio State Buckeyes. From 1927 to 1968, there was a natural grass surface, which in 1969 replaced by artificial turf. 1991 natural grass was again moved, but this due to a very high moisture in the soil proved to be problematic. Since 2003 to play again on a new artificial turf, which, however, should not differ in the playing characteristics of natural grass.

In 2010 the stage for 226 million U.S. dollars has been renovated.
