Mickey Hart

Mickey Hart ( born September 11, 1943) is an American drummer and percussionist, who was best known as a member of the rock band the Grateful Dead. Together with Bill Kreutzmann he formed the Rhythm Devils, the percussion tandem of the band.

Hart was always interested in percussion techniques, instruments and traditions from around the world. On his travels he visited the masters of different techniques all over the world and collected recordings and instruments. He wrote a number of books on the subject. His album Planet Drum with Vikku Vinayakram and various other guest musicians won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best World Music category.

In addition, Hart wrote music for film and television (such as for the film Apocalypse Now ), and for major events like the Olympic Games 1996.

1994 was recorded with Mickey Hart Grateful Dead into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1999 he played at Woodstock III. In 2000 he received an honorary doctorate of Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center. 2009 his CD Global Drum Project ( with Zakir Hussain and others) for Best Contemporary World Music Album was awarded the Grammy.
