Microbial cyst

As a cyst or cyst form of the duration of certain unicellular organisms, plants and animals is called, the form in adverse living conditions such as drought or nutrient deficiency. They can also be used for the propagation and spread. Especially unicellular organisms that live in low-tide waters, have the ability to cyst formation, the encystment.

Cysts of certain bacteria, such as Azotobacter, caused by conversion of the living cells and have thickened cell walls. It may be surrounded by a fixed sleeve and a plurality of cells, as for example in the myxobacteria. From cyst- forming protist a shell is mostly excreted, which protects against the effects of the environment. The storage material polyhydroxybutyric (PHB ) is often incorporated into the cyst.

Cysts resist drought, mechanical loads and radiation, but not extreme heat.
