Microcomputer

Microcomputer ( microprocessor ) are computers which are more compact than mainframe and mini- computer and can be operated by a single person. The term is now mostly associated with the first wave of 8- bit home and office computer.

In a narrower definition was understood among computers in a specific performance class that were less powerful than mainframe and mini-computer and only had a single microprocessor as a central unit. They have been used a million times as a home and office computer. The equipment was designed for these applications.

The term workstation designated versatile microcomputer for professional use, most of which were easier to maintain, more reliable and much more powerful as a home or office computer. They were used mainly in scientific and technological matters and were involved in the rule permanently in a network.

In everyday language, the use of the term microcomputer has declined significantly since the 1980s and is hardly more common, although a growing circle corresponds to modern, microprocessor-controlled devices in the definition of a microcomputer. It is therefore desktop devices largely by the term personal computer ( PC) has been replaced. In other designs, such as embedded systems, which are now characterized by an increased level of integration among the components and a corresponding compact version, the original term, however, remains valid.
