Microhydromys

Microhydromys is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species.

There are very small representatives of Altweltmäuse, they reach a body length 8-11 cm, which must be added an 8 to 10 inches long tail comes. It weighs 9 to 12 grammes. The fur of these animals is colored brown to black-gray on the back, the belly is lighter. The muzzle is short, the first upper molar is extended remarkably.

Both species live in New Guinea, their habitat is hilly forests. They come here in slightly lower heights before than others, closely related Altweltmäuse in New Guinea. They are primarily bottom dwellers and feed on insects.

There are two types:

  • Microhydromys richardsoni inhabited the northern New Guinea. The coat of this type is colored dark gray instead, the tail tip is white.
  • Microhydromys argenteus was described in 2010 and is only three localities in southern New Guinea known.

Earlier it was also Pseudohydromys musseri ( Flannery, 1989) counted the genus Microhydromys, but put back in the genus Pseudohydromys.

Little is known about the level of danger of these animals, both types of IUCN under "too little data available " ( data deficient ) listed.
