Microphthalmia
Microphthalmia ( from Greek μικρός micros "small" and ὄφθαλμος ophthalmos "eye" ) refers to the innate, unusual smallness or even rudimentary training of one or both eyeballs.
The microphthalmia is based on a disturbance of morphogenesis of eye development. This is genetically determined ( eg in connection with trisomy 13 or the Peters - plus syndrome ) and can usually occur along with other inhibition malformations.
Another trigger may be an infection with rubella during pregnancy.
