Microsciurus

The New World dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus ) are a genus of tree squirrels of tropical South and Central America.

There are four types:

  • Central American dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus Alfari ) (Allen, 1895), Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Northern Colombia
  • Western dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus mimulus ) (Thomas, 1898), Ecuador, Colombia, Panama
  • Amazonian dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus flaviventer ) (Gray, 1867), western Amazon basin
  • Santander dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus santanderensis ) ( Hernández- Camacho, 1957), Central Columbia

With a body length of 15 cm and a tail length of 12 cm, the dwarf squirrels are not as tiny as the name suggests could be; they are only slightly smaller than a squirrel. Is much smaller, the smallest New World squirrels. Dwarf squirrels are whitish gray or brown on the upper side and lower side.

All dwarf squirrel this genus are inhabitants of tropical rain forests. None of the species is considered endangered. That they are not well known and are rarely seen, but is due to their hidden and afraid of life. The evidence indicates that the lifestyle of those of tropical squirrel species is not dissimilar.
