Microsoft Jet Database Engine

Microsoft Jet database engine (Microsoft Joint Engine Technology Engine ) is a relational database engine introduced in 1992 under Windows operating systems. Microsoft developed this two completely independent versions of the Jet: Red and Blue.

Red Jet

The Red Jet is a relational database and provides the interface between the database and the user requests. Their field of application is that of desktop databases. Distributed it is usually in combination with other programs such as Access or Visual Basic, but was part of the Microsoft Data Access Components ( MDAC to version 2.5), which can be downloaded from the Microsoft website (file name: MDAC_TYP.EXE ). The current Jet Engine can now be installed on the Jet Engine Service Pack 8. About DLLs they will be integrated into these programs.

The Jet Engine provides:

  • Multiuser (theoretically up to 255, but realistically only up to 80 at a time, write access rather less than 10)
  • Integrated Query Processor (commands are processed as follows: Definition # Compilation # # Execution Optimization )
  • Built-in integrity check
  • Security features (among user privileges)
  • Remote access options

Jet stores data by default in Microsoft Database Files (. Mdb ), but also supports other formats, such as dBASE, Paradox, Microsoft FoxPro, Microsoft Excel, and ODBC.

Versions of the jet engine and their use:

  • Access 1.1
  • Visual Basic 3.0
  • Access 2.0
  • Access 2.0
  • Visual Basic 4.0 ( 16-bit)
  • Access 95
  • Excel 95
  • Project 4.1
  • Project 95
  • MFC 4.x
  • Visual Basic 4.0 ( 32-bit)
  • Access 97
  • Excel 97
  • PowerPoint 97
  • Word 97
  • MFC 5.0
  • Visual Basic 5.0
  • Internet Information Services 3.0
  • Access 2000-2003
  • Access 2007
  • Access 2010

As an alternative and possible successor to Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE ), or called from the 2005 version of SQL Server Express, a free available, but somewhat limited version of MS SQL Server available. It is used, inter alia, from SQL Server 7.0 and as a second engine for Access from Access 2000.

Jet Blue

Completely different is is the Jet Blue, also known as the Extensible Storage Engine. Jet Blue also is a RDBMS that is based however on a write-ahead logging with two-phase commit and is optimized especially for semi-structured data. For the first time it was used in Exchange Server 4.0, is still in the current version of Exchange base for this server. In addition to the Exchange server, the Jet Blue also comes in other products used:

  • Active Directory Engine
  • WINS
  • File Replication Service
  • Security Configuration Editor
  • Certificate Services
  • Microsoft Update client
  • Windows Desktop Search ( as metadata storage )

The engine is designed for a significantly larger number of accesses, as the jet of Access. More than 3,000 of parallel connections is not a problem with 8 processors (currently the maximum) are more than 10,000 simultaneous connections possible. The current version number of the Jet Blue is 4.0.
