Microsporum canis

Macroconidia of M. canis

Microsporum canis is a parasitic on the skin occurring fungus ( dermatophyte ). He is a mainly cats and dogs frequent cause of dermatophytosis and is one of the zoophilic dermatophytes. In humans and other mammals it can trigger a disease with which he is a zoonotic agents.

In culture media the fungus produces cotton-like and sharply defined colonies that are initially creamy white, colored later orange - yellowish. In the microscopic picture he shows septate hyphae and a few smooth, club-shaped microconidia along the hyphae. The numerous spindle-shaped macroconidia are 10-25 × 35-110 microns in size, have 6 to 18 chambers, knot -shaped ends and a thick, rough wall.
