Middelburg is a city in the South African province of Mpumalanga. It is located in the municipality in the district of Steve Tshwete Nkangala.

Geography

2011 Middelburg had 87 348 inhabitants. Middelburg is the administrative center of the district and the community. The former townships are Mhluzi, Nasareth and East Dene. The city lies on the Klein Olifants River, a tributary of the Lepelle. About 25 kilometers to the west is the city of Emalahleni, in which there is coal mining.

History

Middelburg was founded in 1864 by Voortrekkers in the area of the farm Sterkfontein as Nasareth, German: root dry land. 1872, the name was in Middelburg ( German: Mittelburg ) changed to the location between Pretoria and the gold mining town of Lydenburg (now Mashishing ) to describe. 1890 a Dutch Reformed church was built, called Witkerk. In the Second Boer War, British troops set up in the city a concentration camp. 1381 Afrikaner women and children died here. In addition to their graves the Memorial Museum was built.

The largest company is Columbus Stainless. The coal needed for steel production is sourced from Emalahleni. In addition, many agricultural products are grown around Middelburg.

Just south of Middelburg runs in east-west direction, the N4, which is part of the Trans - Kalahari Highway. The N11 leads in a north-south direction through Middelburg and crosses the N4 southwest of the city. Middelburg is situated on the railway line Johannesburg Komatipoort, which is also served in passenger transport.
