Middle of the night is an American feature film from the year 1959.

Action

Betty Preisser is 24 and recently divorced. She works as a secretary and part-time model in New York City in the textile factory of Jerry Kingsley. Jerry is 56 and for 2 years a widower. One day Betty is visited by her boss Jerry in your home who wants to pick up a document for the office. They talk long. Jerry feels strongly attracted to the attractive young woman. Slowly, a relationship develops between the two. During a brief joint Christmas holidays Jerry Betty asks her if she wants to marry him. Betty reacts hysterically, because she has not yet overcome her failed marriage, but he confesses her love and agrees to the marriage. On the way back from vacation Betty is concerned about the reaction of Jerry's family on the upcoming wedding. Allegations she hears but then also from her own mother, who can not understand why she wants to marry a much older man. Even Jerry's family, especially his sister Evelyn and his daughter Lillian, leading to confusion. Jerrys daughter throws the almost the same Betty before she was her only after the money of the father. Only his son Jack congratulates Jerry. His colleague Walter Lockmann, which is a little older than Jerry, this advises the marriage. The start of a common future runs difficult. On a visit to a bar Betty meets her ex-husband, who welcomed a friend. This makes Jerry so jealous that he gets into an argument with Betty and she leaves him. When her ex-husband George then shows up, she realizes that she still feels attracted to him. In a later meeting with Jerry she confesses to him that she has cheated on him with her ex- husband, but have no intention of wanting to be together again with George. Jerry is so disappointed about the fraud that he wants to cancel the wedding with Betty. Alone, he withdraws into his apartment. Then he gets a call from the wife of Lockman, who has tried to take his own life. The reason for this is Lockmans frustration about his missed life. The desperation of Lockman Jerry reveals that his feelings about Betty are so strong that he can get over and above their fraud. He goes to Betty and they close in his arms.

The film participated in the competition at the International Film Festival of Cannes 1959, was at the award ceremony but left empty-handed. Fredric March was in 1960 nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
