History

Since the Norman Conquest it was reserved in England only clerics to deal with legal matters, or right to speak.

After the separation of church and secular law in the late 13th century, the Inns of Court, a complex of buildings were in the heart of London, set up as a living, dining and classrooms for the growing layer of the secular jurists.

It is assumed (no exact source available ) that the Middle Temple as the other three areas of a building belonging to the Inns of Court, adopted in the mid-14th century and was built to new. The name comes from the Middle Temple Knights Templar, who had this area as the western part of their temple district in London for more than 150 years of ownership until they were disbanded in 1312 and the whole area fell to the king. The secular jurists then shared locally in two bar associations, the Middle Temple and the Inner Temple. Both chambers were first mentioned in a manuscript of 1388. At the Templars, the well-preserved round church ( Temple Church ), which is centrally located next to the hall of the interior temple ( Inner Temple Hall ) is located) area remembers ( it is an outdoor temple ( Outer Temple at the edge of the district, but no separate Bar Associations houses ).

This round church was at times of Henry II of Heraclius of Caesarea, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, consecrated already in 1185. The Templars always built their churches in round shape, as these grave at the Holy Church in Jerusalem should remember. In the church are the tombs of English Crusaders, whose representation is to remind cross-legged on their participation in the Crusades. Outside the church, the sculpture can be seen from that period, two Templars on a single horse, indicating symbolically to the strong community of knights with each other.

Part of the Middle Temple was consecrated land belonging to a monastery, the rest was not ordained. The name Cloisters ( monastery ) for the building, the refectory at the Inner Temple Hall, a reminder of its former life. In the eastern part of the Middle Temple, the laity were housed, and the non-ordained Knight of the Order.

At the time of the Templars of the Middle Temple political and economic center was the royal activities, since the Order guaranteed religious and military protection.

The Master (Master) of the Templars at this location was also assumed supreme of all offices in the UK and only the Grand Master abroad.
