Middleburg is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

History

Middleburg was founded in 1787 by Levin Powell, a revolutionary Lieutenant Colonel and Virginia statesman. He bought the land for about $ 6 per acre from Joseph Chinn, a cousin of George Washington. The original name " Chinn 's Crossroads ," Powell changed in Middleburg, since the city midway between Alexandria and Winchester on the Ashby 's Gap was trading route. Nowadays there runs along the U.S. Highway 50.

In the city there are several inns, including the Red Fox Inn and Tavern, which supposedly is supposed to be " oldest original inn in America." The Red Fox Tavern was a meeting place for the Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his Rangers. A century later, President Kennedy held secretary, Pierre Salinger, press conferences there.

Since the beginning of the 20th century received Middleburg visitors who came to the city for fox hunting and steeplechase. The charming village soon got the reputation as a " horse and hunt capital of the nation " and attracted famous visitors from all over the country.

Famous residents of the city were Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor ( when she was married to Senator John Warner ), Jack Kent Cooke and Alice du Pont Mills.
