The system

Midgard is in contrast to Dungeons & Dragons no step- based system. The characters have indeed a stage ( in Midgard " degrees "), and this only shows how much the character has learned in his life (experience) and is often a prerequisite to learn something. There are 15 character classes, but these only determine how easy or difficult a character learning a skill falls. Most skills can theoretically be learned by almost every class, only some drops this class heavier than others - for example, can theoretically later learn the spells also a warrior, but this is very expensive for him.

At dice the system uses a W100 (mostly by two W10 replaced), a W20, W6, as well as the classic since the latest edition and the W3 (the number indicates the page number of the cube, see Dice ).

Midgard led ( in the 1985 edition ) as the first role-playing game, the separation of stamina points and life points, where the former can be greatly increased in the course of a campaign, while the latter ( almost) constant. This also allows high level characters do not completely safely pull into fights - although they are exhausted less quickly, but a targeted hit is just as deadly as a " beginner " for them.

The game world

Since this is a fantasy role-playing game in Midgard, it is hardly surprising that Midgard has many similarities to JRR Tolkien's world from the Lord of the Rings. The player is sure to elves, dwarves and halflings make ( the ordinary human being but occur much more often ), but also dragons, trolls and of course various forms of magic are not exactly rare. However, the Midgard - game world is culturally more diverse designed as Tolkien consciously "European" Middle-earth. In the game, most earthly cultures emerge with the exception of North America in a slightly modified or combined form. In contrast to the rather renaissance -like Aventuria the Midgard world is conceived far more archaic, mostly it is characterized early medieval, even if it is different from the rest of the world cut regions out there that are still on the state of the Stone Age, and the center of Midgard on the path is in the Renaissance. With Myrkgard there is a second game world that offers a grim parallel world to Midgard.

Midgard

The known part of Midgard consists of four continents. In the center of the map is the "Sea of Five Winds ". At this the northwest of the continent borders Vester European-style hood with the countries of Alba, Chryseia, Erainn, Ywerddon, Clanngadan and Fuardain. South of Vester Esse Lamaran lies with the coastal states, eschar, and Urruti buluga and the Ikengabecken. To the east of the Sea of Five Winds is SiRAO, an Asian- embossed continent. To SiRAO include Waeland, Moravod that tegarische steppe, Aran, Medjis, KanThaiPan, Rawindra and the island kingdom Minangpahit. In the far west of the known world is the continent Huaxal, including Nahuatlan, a state with a South American - Indian culture, and south of the "Fire Islands ". Approximately in the middle of the sea of Five Winds is the Valianische archipelago, the remnant of the "War of the Magi " defunct empire.

Myrkgard

Was introduced in 2003 on an adventure - cycle and a source tape a parallel world to Midgard, which is much darker. This won the war of the Magi 800 years before the current action, the so-called Seemeister. The players here are some interesting and dangerous adventure opportunities - without the backing of the "good" gods ( but it is possible to walk between the worlds ).

History

Published in 1978 Jürgen Franke self-published a set of rules under the name " Empires Of MAGIRA ". Located had this first role-playing game set in the fantasy world MAGIRA (known from the novels of author Hugh Walker and from a continuous round of tabletop simulation game Armageddon ) to which had to be omitted due to licensing disputes but later.

In 1981, the improved game under the new name Midgard was published.

It was still before the world MAGIRA, with Midgard was never her bound by the rules of a particular game world or to a particular (more or less esoteric ) philosophy. Thus, there are rather a devotee of a particular fixed name of God in Midgard neutral " rule priest " - to which sovereign deity of the game world it is exactly, remains gamemaster and players left. Even otherwise preferred Midgard linguistically quite the unpretentious - " game manager " instead of " master ", " adventurer " instead of " Hero ," etc.

1983 a rules extension " Midgard II " will be released.

In 1985, the revised rules in two books under the name " Midgard - The fantasy role-playing game " and " Midgard - Key to adventure ". The rules had been for almost completely turned inside out - about 20 classes instead of the previous four, introduction of endurance points / life point distinction, extensive system of skills, etc. This was the last edition, which ( in the Appendix) presented nor the world MAGIRA, and in J. Franke's own " publisher of fantasy and science fiction role-playing games " (short VF & SF) appeared.

1989 and 1991 appeared from the game manufacturer clover matches the third, only slightly modified, edition of the regulations for the first time as a box. From now called the underlying world " Midgard " and was closely modeled on MAGIRA. Even some country names have been retained unchanged. Then it got a little quiet around Midgard. The second part of the rules was soon out of print and has not been reprinted. Also new adventure modules published only relatively rarely.

A scaled-down Einsteigerbox named " The adventure begins " was published in 1999 at Pegasus Press. This was based in large part already on the rules of the fourth edition, which appeared in the following years. However, the fourth edition was moderately altered compared to the 1985 and the 1989 editions.

Appeared in 2000 after a long break with " Midgard - The Arcanum " the magic part of the fourth edition of the regulations in hardcover. He was succeeded in 2001 " Midgard - The fantasy role-playing game," 2002 " Midgard - The Compendium " with a few extra rules and 2003 " Midgard - The Bestiary ", which describes the various creatures of Midgard.

2006 with " Midgard - Master of the spheres " - now under their own imprints Midgard Press - for the time being published last part of the rules. For the 25th anniversary of the role play, 2006, the complete set of rules appeared in a three -volume deluxe edition, again under the old VFSF publisher of the 1985 edition. With " Midgard - The Code ", " Midgard - The Bestarium " and " Midgard - The Arcanum " the complete Midgard rulebook is published as a deluxe edition.

2007 was released in October after long preparations and numerous friendlies " Midgard - the board game " as a cube and strategy game in the famous Midgard world as a licensed product. Especially for RPG beginners series Runebladed was launched. The first volume of " Rune Blade 1: blade finder " the multi-part series begins with a comic book to introduce the events and characters and also appeared in October.

2008, the publishing house out of print adventure as a purchasable PDF began to make available again. In addition, a completely new adventure as a purchasable PDF was instead of the usual published as a print publication. The sequel to " Rune Blade 2: Wolf Winter" finally appeared in February 2008, in June, the last part " Finstermal ".

2009 saw the fan base the revised edition of the out of print for some time Alba source book as well as a source book to the culture of the Dwarves, the first description of a culture of non-human races. In the fanbase three novels were published in the context of the game world. 2010 published two brand new official source books and other novels from the fan base. Currently ( November 2013 ) there are 45 official publications for this edition of the rules.

2013 finally appeared a substantially revised new edition of the Principles, Midgard 5 in Midgard Press. For the first time the community of players involved in the revision process ( open innovation ) and many desires, experiences and suggestions were taken into account. In the new edition of the rules have been freed from the old baggage, simplified and completed a realignment to import and transfer passengers.
