Midgut

The midgut, also known as Mesodaeum or Mesenteron, the middle portion of the intestine.

The midgut of vertebrates

In vertebrates which begins in the midgut region of the duodenum and extends to the Cannon -Böhm - point in the range of the large intestine, part of the larger portion of one of them.

The midgut of invertebrates

In the molting animals ( Ecdysozoa ), the midgut is the part of the intestine, which is entodermal formed and not skinned accordingly.

In different taxa of invertebrates a midgut gland has independently formed. This is the portion of the intestine, which is the important for the digestive enzymes. Such a gland found in the molluscs, the arachnids, crustaceans and starfish. Some representatives of these groups of animals, the midgut gland also takes over the function as absorption and storage of nutrients, in these cases, one speaks of a hepatopancreas.

Insects have an enzyme- producing Mitteldarmepithel instead of a midgut gland.
