Midleton

Midleton ( Irish: Mainistir na Corann ) is a city in the southeast of County Cork in the south of Ireland. The town grew around the Cistercian monastery Midleton Abbey, founded in the 12th century by monks from Burgundy.

According to the legend Irish Whiskey was invented in Midleton. In the distillery can be tasted the uisce beatha, the "water of life".

The population of the town was established in 2011 with 3,743 people. Many of them commute to the nearby city of Cork. Midleton is located on the N25 about halfway between Cork City and Youghal.

Old Midleton Distillery

A distillery was established in Midleton in the year 1825 by the Murphy family, which now operates among other things, a brewery in Cork. The provisions were two years earlier concerning alcohol taxation loosened so that the distillery was built on a grand scale. Among other things, there is therefore in Midleton most burning boiler ( pot still ) the world. The whiskey from Midleton found primarily locally large paragraph, Paddy brand was named after its most successful sales representatives Paddy Flaherty and still exists today. End of the 19th century merged with other Midleton distilleries from the Cork area for Cork Distilleries Company and in 1966 with Jameson and Power's from Dublin to Irish Distillers Limited. In 1975, the production was shut down and moved to a brand new neighboring factory. Since 1992, the old distillery is open as a museum and is run by Irish Distillers as Jameson Heritage Centre.
