Midongy du sud National Park

Geography

It is located in the region of Vangaindrano Atsimo - Atsinanana, about 42 km from Befotaka and 90 km. It extends to a height of between 689 and 1,679 m. Its highest peak is Mont Papango.

Fauna

In the national park is home to many endemic species of reptiles, birds and lemurs, including:

  • The leaf-tailed gecko Arongo ( Uroplatus fimbriatus ).
  • The predator Fossa, also called Frettkatze.
  • The chameleon ( Furcifer verrucosus ).
  • The spur cuckoo Toloho or Centropus Toulou, an endemic species.
  • The rare Halsbandmaki ( Eulemur collaris ).
  • Sifaka ( Propithecus sp.)
  • The Schuppenerdracke ( Geobiastes squamigera ).
  • The endemic Streifenkehltimalie ( Neomixis striatigula ).

Flora

The National Park protects 14 endangered species red list of the International Union of Nature Protection ( IUCN).

The forest of Midongy du Sud consists largely of rosewood and ebony species. Here also grow 48 ferns and medicinal plants, including Mystroxylon aethiopicum the Celastracaeae, Medinilla family, and the Ranavao or Dilobeia thouars.

Here are also sites vestitum also in CITES Appendix II protected, native orchids Aeranthes caudata and Bulbophyllum.
