Midžor

The Midschur, Midžor or Midzhur ( Миджур Bulgarian, or Serbian Cyrillic Миџор ) is a mountain which, at the Serbian-Bulgarian border, situated in the western part of the Balkan Mountains ( Stara Planina ). With 2169 meters above sea level it is the highest mountain in Central Serbia.

Prior to the early 1990s the access from both sides of the border was prohibited on the top for tourists. On the Bulgarian side of the summit from the village of Dolni Lom, Vidin Province is achievable. About seven kilometers from the village of Dolni Lom is the refuge ( 840 meters). In addition, there is another shelter which Midžor is called. On the east is the left under the protection of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Tschuprene. It is one of the last refuges in Bulgaria for nesting grouse. At the foot of the mountain lying on the Bulgarian side, the sources of the river Lom and on that of the Serbian Timoks.

For a summit ascent of the Bulgarian side, a special permit of the border police in Sofia is necessary.
