Miguel Torga

Miguel Torga, actually Adolfo Correia Rocha (born 12 August 1907 in São Martinho de Antas, Trás -os- Montes, Portugal, † January 17, 1995 in Coimbra, Portugal) was a Portuguese writer, physician, poet and novelist.

Seminary and Brazil

Miguel Torga was born as Adolfo Correia Rocha in the province of Trás -os- Montes. His father, Francisco Correia Rocha, a simple worker, did not want that his son also " swing the ax " must, as his father was already doing, and thus introduced him to the alternative, enter a seminary or to go to Brazil. Faced with this choice, Torga occurred in 1918 in a seminary. With time, however, he realized that he wanted to become a priest and so he wandered from 1920 to Brazil, where he worked on the plantation of his uncle. His uncle sent him to Brazil on a high school.

Medical studies in Coimbra

1925 Torga returned back to Portugal, where she completed high school and took a medical degree at the University of Coimbra. The academic life he met there, irritated him at times. For the otherworldliness of some fellow students he had no good words left. In 1928 he published his first volume of poetry Ansiedade (fear, anxiety, desire) and he began to cooperate in the literary magazine Presença. After completing his doctorate, he worked as a country doctor in his homeland.

Writer and opposition

In 1934 he gave A Terceira Voz ( The third part) out - the first release under the pseudonym he used from then on: Miguel Torga. Miguel after a tough heather, which grows based on Miguel de Cervantes and Miguel de Unamuno and Torga in the mountains. In 1936, he traveled to various European countries, then settled in Leiria as a physician and eventually moved to Coimbra, where he married the literary scholar Andrée Crabbé. Advised by his political opposition to the resentment of the Salazar regime, he was arrested in 1939 and jailed for three months. Later followed by further arrests. Almost all of his books were out Torga self-published. He wrote poetry, short stories and novels and is known as detailed diarist. He was honored for his work with the prestigious Prémio Camões 1989.
