Mihrimah Sultan Mosque (Edirnekapı)

Mihrimah Sultan Mosque ( Turkish Mihrimah Camii, also Edirnekapı Camii ) is a mosque by architect Sinan in Edirnekapı in the European part of Istanbul near the Theodosian land walls.

Founder was Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Sultan Suleiman I and his favorite wife Roxelane and the wife of the Grand Vizier Rustem Pasha. The building was built between 1562-1565 by the architect Sinan. The dome is 37 m high. The interior is divided by four large pillars that support the great dome and three other half-domes. The walls, with its 161 windows let in the natural light and leaves the impression of a spiritual ascent. Damage caused by earthquakes in the years 1719, 1766 and 1894 have been fixed to 1910 and in the 1960s. The meantime dilapidated building was extensively restored in 2010-2011. It had suffered heavy damages again during the earthquake of 1999.

For complex included a madrasa Foundation, a Kulliye and hammam, and shops, parts of which have now fallen victim to road construction. In the cemetery behind the mosque is the Turbe of Damad Ahmed Pasha died in 1575.

Another donated by Mihrimah and also built by Sinan mosque, which is also called Mihrimah Camii or İskele Camii, is located on the Asian side of Istanbul to the ship pier in Uskudar.
