Mike Richmond (musician)

Michael Richmond ( born February 26, 1948 in Philadelphia / Pennsylvania) is an American jazz bassist.

Richmond began as a guitarist and changed in his high school orchestra for bass. He studied music at Temple University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree and took private lessons with Jimmy Garrison. He worked with musicians such as Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Don Cherry, Karl Berger, George Gruntz, Walter Norris, the folk - blues singer and songwriter Richie Havens and the Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. Since 1980 he was a member of the Mingus Dynasty. In 1989, he played in a trio with George Gruntz and Adam Nussbaum ( Serious Fun, Enja 1990).

In the 1990s he was a member of John Fischer's group interface with Vincent Chancey, Theo Jörgensmann and Ben Kilmer and worked with the Bujazzo. In 1991, he appeared at the concert of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones in Montreux. Currently, he plays in the Combo Nuvo with Dave Schroeder, Rich Shemaria, Brad Shepik and John Hadfield.

Richmond teaches at New York University, where he was Teacher of the Year Award in 1994. He has written a standard work on playing the walking bass.
