Mikhail Alpatov

Mikhail Vladimirovich Alpatow (Russian: Михаил Владимирович Алпатов; born December 10, 1902 in Moscow, † May 9, 1986 ) was a Russian art historian.

Life

Alpatow was born on 10 December 1902 in Moscow. He studied art history at Moscow University and taught after studying his subject at various art schools, including at the Frankfurt Städel school. He was for many years director of the Institute for Theory and History of Art at the Academy of Arts of the USSR.

Alpatow dealt primarily with the Old Russian and Western European art. His main areas of art-historical activity were accurate interpretations of individual works of art and the intensive study of individual artists.
