Mikhail Youzhny

Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny (Russian: Михаил Михайлович Южный; born June 25, 1982 in Moscow ) is a Russian tennis player.

Career

Youzhny became a professional in 1999. In 2000, he reached his first quarter-final on the ATP Tour in Moscow. On his first Grand Slam tournament, he reached the third round of the 2001 Australian Open. It was followed by the first ATP Tour semi-final in Copenhagen. At Wimbledon, he lost in the fourth round against Patrick Rafter. At the U.S. Open he reached the third round, where he lost to Pete Sampras.

In 2002, Youzhny secured his first ATP title and led Russia in the crucial match against France for first win the Davis Cup. Here he was, after it was tied after four games 2-2, nominated instead of the playing out of shape Yevgeny Kafelnikov for the decisive individual. Although the game took place in France, he was still able to defeat the Frenchman Paul -Henri Mathieu in five sets after a 0-2 sentence residue. His teammates Kafelnikov and Marat Safin described him at the time as the "new tennis star of Russia" and who traveled former President Boris Yeltsin congratulated him personally.

In 2006 he reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament at the U.S. Open for the first time. In the quarterfinals, he beat it the world number two, Rafael Nadal, in four sets. In the semifinals, then defeated Andy Roddick Youzhny again in four sets.

Youzhny won the tournament in 2007 in Rotterdam. He also reached at the tournaments in Dubai, where he lost to Roger Federer, and in Munich, where he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber, in each case the final. At the French Open, the Russian moved into the second round, where he again was beaten Federer. At Wimbledon, Youzhny moved into the second round, but it lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets.

In 2008 he started the season with the fourth ATP tournament victory of his career when he was able to win against Nadal in the final in Chennai 6:0, 6:1. In the subsequent Australian Open he first came to the quarterfinals, where he lost to the later surprise finalist Jo -Wilfried Tsonga. Youzhny reached his best ever ranking in the world rankings in the following week with eighth.

In February 2010, he advanced to the finals in Rotterdam, he was forced to retire in the second set because of physical problems, the match against Sweden's Robin Soderling. Right at the next tournament in Dubai, he moved back to the finals, but lost after a hard fight with 5:7, 7:5 and 3:6 against Novak Djokovic. At the BMW Open in 2010 he won the title.
