Mikhaylovsk, Stavropol Krai

Mikhailovsk (Russian Михайловск ) is a city in southern Russia in the Stavropol region. It has 70 981 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is located 12 km north-east of the regional capital Stavropol.

History

The town was founded in 1784 as a village by the name Mikhailovskoie of settlers from the Kursk province ( today's Kursk Oblast ). For a long time he served as one of the southern border cities of the Russian Empire; Beginning of the 19th century was the village the status of a Cossack village and its inhabitants belonged since the Cossacks. 1870 Mikhailovskoie was an ordinary village again after it had lost its military importance.

From 1963 to 1999, the village was called Schpakowskoje ( Шпаковское ) in honor of an army officer with the family name Schpak. In 1999 it received city rights, and its present name, which was derived from the old village name. The Rajon whose administrative center is Mikhailovsk is, but still Schpakowskoje.
