Miklós Barabás

Miklos Barabas, also Nicholas of Barabas ( born February 22, 1810 in Márkusfalva, today Marcusa, Romania, † February 12, 1898 in Budapest) was a Hungarian painter who is best known for his portraits and his genre paintings of the Hungarian countryside. During his lifetime he was one of the most esteemed painters of his country. His realistic paintings were found in many wealthy households.

Life

Barabas began his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the years 1829 and 1830. Having returned to Cluj in 1830, he learned the art of lithography by Gábor Barra. Since 1831 Barabas spent two years in Bucharest, where he was also a portrait painter. From 1834 to 1835 he was on a study trip to Italy. After this long break, he continued this study from 1836 to 1838 in Budapest. From 1840 he finally settled down in Budapest and stayed there until his death.

Work

Artistic Barabas was influenced by Viennese art taste to the times of his studies. His portraits are often small in size and characterized by the Biedermeier style. Artistically it is significant for two main reasons. He coined with his activity in Budapest art scene of the time, and his paintings hold the history and culture of his country. Among his most important portraits include the Franz Liszt; an insight into the social life are also, for example, the large-format picture " The foundation stone " in which Barabas held the ceremony, with the 1842 began the construction of the Budapest Chain Bridge. He also turned his life lithographs, some of which corresponded to a high künstlicherischem value fro.
