Miklós Nyiszli

Miklós Nyiszli ( born June 17, 1901 in Szilágysomlyó ( Schomlenmarkt ), then Austria - Hungary in Transylvania; † 5 May 1956 Oradea ) was a Romanian, Hungarian - speaking physician and author. He was a survivor of the Holocaust.

Life

The son of a Jewish merchant, was born in Northern Transylvania. After studying medicine in Cluj, Kiel and Breslau, he practiced in his homeland as a forensic pathologist and general physician.

End of May 1944 Nyiszli was deported with his wife and 15 -year-old daughter to the concentration camp Auschwitz -Birkenau and first in Auschwitz -Monowitz to forced labor in the Buna - branch plant of IG Colors used. End of June 1944, he was transferred because of his work as a doctor in the prison hospital to Auschwitz- Birkenau. There he was employed from the first camp doctor Josef Mengele as a pathologist in the refurbished section area of crematorium II. As was done in mid-January 1945, the evacuation of the camp with a subsequent death march to Mauthausen, Nyiszli survived in addition to Ebensee camp, where he was liberated by American troops in early May from captivity.

After returning to his home Nyiszli wrote within a few months his memoir. It was published in 1946 in Hungarian under the title "I was the pathologist Dr. Mengele in the Auschwitz crematorium .". Nyiszli's memoirs were the first report on the tragic forced labor of the Jewish " Sonderkommando" in Auschwitz- Birkenau, in the crematoria and the armed prisoner revolt in the death factory of Auschwitz Significant portions of his reports were in the film by B. In October 1947 Nyiszli said as a witness before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg from his time in the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz -Birkenau. Nyiszli died in 1956 after a long illness from a heart attack.
