MikMod

MikMod is a free playback software for grid sequencer modules of many different formats. The back-end functionality was encapsulated in a program library named libmikmod, which is included by a number of other software, including playback software such as Audacious and frameworks for the development of computer games and the like, such as Crystal Space, SDL or ClanLib.

Features

There are virtually supports all major formats Mod. The included front-end works with playlists and can save them. MikMod can play compressed Rastersequenzermodule directly. It supports data compression formats gzip, bzip2, LHA / LZH, RAR, ZIP and zoo.

Availability

MikMod is distributed as free software in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL), the library under the GNU Lesser General Public License ( LGPL). It has been ported to many software platforms, including DOS, Unix-like, Windows, Mac OS, BeOS, and Java. MikMod can be installed directly from the standard repositories for all popular Linux distributions.

Technology

MikMod is written in ANSI -C. A modular internal design enables fairly simple extension to support new formats. The character-based user interface of the frontend is based on ncurses.

History

The project was initiated by Jean -Paul Mikkers ( MikMak ) in 1992 and only ran under MS- DOS beginning. He put the source code open, but not cleared the users typical of free and open source software rights. In the meantime, he published under informal license terms that are comparable to those of the BSD license and is now acknowledged as the users the essential right to use for each ( also commercial ) purpose. End of 1995, the last version was published by the original author.
