Milan Chalupa

Milan Chalupa ( born July 4, 1953 in Oudoleň, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player, who was for many years at Dukla Jihlava and the EHC Freiburg under contract. Today Chalupa working as a hockey coach in the Czech Extraliga and 1 league. He is currently in charge of the fourth-class HC Moravské Budějovice.

Career as a player

Milan Chalupa began his career in 1966 in the junior team of Jiskra Havlíčkův Brod, although he was at that time only 13 years old. Until 1972, he played for this team before he came to Dukla Jihlava on the juniors of Dukla Liberec. For Dukla Jihlava he made his debut in the season of 1973/74 in the top division of Czechoslovakia and remained loyal to this club until 1984. 1974, 1982, 1983 and 1984, he was Czechoslovakian champion with this team. In eleven seasons for the Jihlava defender completed 440 games in which he scored 153 points scorer.

During the NHL Entry Draft in 1984 he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round to 49th place and got permission to go to North America. For Detroit, he completed due to injuries only 14 games in the National Hockey League and later returned to Europe.

Between 1985 and 1990 he played for EHC Freiburg in the second and first division before he announced end of his career during the 1990/91 season. Two years later, in the playdowns of the season 1992/93, he made his comeback at EHCF. At the start of the following season, he returned to Dukla Jihlava and completed another twelve games in the Czech Extraliga before he resigned for good. With 47 goals and 168 assists in 259 games for the EHCF he still stands in ninth place of eternal Scorer list of EHCF. His jersey number # 5 has been banned by the club and is therefore no longer awarded to players.

Career as a coach

Since his retirement from competitive sport Milan Chalupa works as a hockey coach. He oversaw the HC Moeller Pardubice as assistant coach, the HC Orli Znojemští (2000/ 01) as head coach and Dukla Jihlava in the season 2005/06.

Internationally

Milan Chalupa represented the Czechoslovak Federation in many international championships, where he won a total of nine medals. 1976 and 1977 he was World Champion, he also took part in three Winter Olympic games and two tournaments at the Canada Cup. Overall, he scored 23 goals in 202 internationals.
