Miles Smiles

Occupation

Miles Smiles is a jazz album by Miles Davis, recorded on 24 and 25 October 1966, released by Columbia Records in 1967.

The album

"Miles Smiles" was after E.S.P. (1965 ), the second studio album by the Miles Davis Quintet. For the entry of Miles Davis Wayne Shorter was the best person; spoke about it in his autobiography: Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams were great musicians; I knew that they worked as a group, as a musical unit ( ... ). In this band, I embodied the inspiration, the experience and the linking form, Tony the fire and the creative function, Wayne was the idea man, an artist, when it came time to implement new musical ideas into a concept. Ron and Herbie were the pivotal points. After Davis ' view, the band further developed by the role Shorter as a composer.

When the band went into the studio in October 1966, they had reached an intensity of the interaction after their two-year interaction, which was surpassed by any other formation in jazz history. In the studio album " Miles Smiles " especially the extraordinary compositions " orbits " and " Footprints" fall on: the abstraction capabilities of "ESP" (here ) pressed ahead, Peter Wießmüller listed on this album, on the other hand is the rhythmic foundation, compared with "ESP" essential polyrhythmic designed with the melodic lines are often played against the pulse. The Shorter compositions were not harmonically very rich and structured so that they let the soloists maximum freedom. (.. ) Another striking aspect is that Hancock often exposed during the solos, what this even more harmonic freedom was similar to Ornette Coleman's piano quartet Wi.

Two of the tracks on this album do not come from the participating musicians; "Freedom Jazz Dance" was a composition by Eddie Harris, who was known by the version of the Miles Davis Quintet only correct and is strongly linked to Davis, who also changed the topic identified. " Gingerbread Boy" comes from an old friend and colleague Davis, saxophonist Jimmy Heath. The Shorter composition " Footprints" was already published in an earlier and more conservative version on the album Adam 's Apple by Wayne Shorter.

Two pieces were placed in a special way part of Davis ' live repertoire of the later 1960s; " Gingerbread Boy" and " Footprints" were played at the time of the Davis band frequently and developed.

Bob Beldon wrote to the mode of origin and the rank of the album: "Miles Smiles" is an incredible album. All the pieces were included with only one take. The band rehearsed the tunes, then developed rhythmic parts or special "feel" of a few sequences of the melody. If the melodic sequence was created, Miles counted out and the moment the pace if he was satisfied with the melody and the rhythm section played optimally, he went with his solo. If he did not stop the band at their game, it was the take! Each title of " Miles Smiles " was created in this way. So there was no additional full takes of these two sessions.

Effect story

The album won the 1967 Leserpoll and ( with The Popular Duke Ellington ) the Kritikerpoll Downbeat as " Record of the Year ". For the historian Jeremy Yudkin on this album are the " forms, tempos and time signatures of free, all the compositions are new, and the band members are also used as a composer. " If it were "music that's not follow the conventions of bebop nor the apparently formless freedom of the New Jazz. " with this album rather start the post bop.

After the album is a jazz club in Vienna and Dusseldorf was named.
