Milford Graves

Milford Graves ( born August 20, 1941 in Queens ) is an American drummer and composer of the Creative Jazz.

Life and work

Graves is one with Sunny Murray, Andrew Cyrille and Rashied Ali to the generation of avant-garde jazz drummers who play the drums dominated the mid-1960s. In 1964 he took up with Paul Bley and Giuseppi Logan. Next, he worked with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, and was with Roswell Rudd, Lewis Worrell and John Tchicai member of the New York Art Quartet, which also occurred with Leroi Jones. In a duo in 1966, he worked with Don Pullen and Andrew Cyrille. Then he played with Albert Ayler ( 1967-68 ) and Sonny Sharrock. While he has taught since 1973 alongside Bill Dixon as a teacher at Bennington College, and as a drummer came into existence only on a few tours, he played from 1983 to 1986 in the percussion quartet " Pieces of Time ", Don Moye, Andrew Cyrille and Kenny Clarke (later Philly Joe Jones) belonged. During this time he also played with Sun Ra. In the 1990s, he appeared primarily with solo performances; it originated on John Zorn's Tzadik label released two solo albums, the " powerful statements are showing his extraordinary talent " by Richard Cook and Brian Morton. In 1991 he played with saxophonist David Murray in a duo whose album " Real Deal". On the Vision Festival in Brooklyn Graves was awarded the 2013 prize for his life's work.
