Military governor of Paris

The governor of Paris (exactly: Governor militaire de Paris, under the ancien régime often also Governor de Paris et de l' Ile- de -France ) is the location of the commander of the French forces in Paris.

The origins of the office are in the dark. Today, it mainly includes prestige, while considering the always restless population of Paris had a political significance in earlier times. The governor was the commander of the garrison of Paris, represented the Armée in the city and especially with the state authorities. Today, he is also responsible to the State President for the organization of the major national celebrations such as the military parade on National Day, 14 July, on the Champs- Elysées.

The Office has two historical phases: During the Ancien Régime, the military governor played a central, albeit temporarily - compared to the provincial governors - more limited role, since he had behind the king when he was in town, stand back. During the Revolution, the office was not occupied, but was reintroduced in 1804 by the current military command.

The Governor of Paris was formerly six stars on the badge of rank and was thus nominally above the Général d' Armée, only the currently created title of Marshal of France was about it.

The list is incomplete and probably not in the correct order, as far as the office years are not available. In this case, the death was chosen as an auxiliary criterion.
