Militello in Val di Catania

Militello in Val di Catania or Sicilian Militeddu in Val di Catania is a municipality with 7691 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily. The place is one of the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, declared by Unesco as a World Heritage.

Location and data

Militello in Val di Catania is situated 51 km southwest of Catania on the north side of the Iblei. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and animal husbandry.

The neighboring municipalities are Franco Fonte (SR ), Lentini (SR ), Mineo, Palagonia, Scordia and Vizzini.

History

The community was founded in the Byzantine period. 1693, the church was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in the same place in the style of the Sicilian Baroque again.
