The Millennium Church (Romanian Biserica Millennium, also Biserica Parohială " Sfânta Fecioară Mary, Regina " ) is the largest Roman Catholic church in the western Romanian city of Timisoara ( Timisoara German ). It is located at the Piata Romanilor ( German Römer square ) in the second district Fabric ( German factory town ), south-west adjacent to Piata Traian Bulevardul on 3 August 1919.

History

Built in 1726, the Catholic community of Timisoara at the Piata Varful cu Dor bere near the old Fabrica de ( the current brewery Timisoreana ) blends Baroque- style Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. With the industrial growth in the factory town and the number of resident Catholics increased, so that the old parish church proved over time to be too small.

The construction of the church began Millennium 1896 according to plans by the architect Ludwig Ybl. After its completion, it was on October 13, 1901 at the Millennium celebrations of the Kingdom of Hungary by Bishop Alexander III. Dessewfy consecrated.

Description

The Millennium Church is the largest Catholic church in Timisoara; they can hold up to 3000 people. Your architectural style carries neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic features. In the construction of the church about four million bricks were used.

The front of the monumental building is impressive with a portal through which three still images are placed, one in the middle is Jesus Christ carrying the cross, which is flanked by the apostles Peter and Paul, left and right.

The rose window above it contains eight stained glass windows. The two towers of the church have a height of 65 meters. They are also equipped with various windows and show their tower clocks the time. The crossing tower is 45 meters high. The big bell weighs 2420 kg and comes from the workshop of Antal Novotny.

The Millennium Church is a three-aisled basilica with a transept. Over the crossing is a crossing tower octagonal. The altarpiece of George Vastag showing Mary with a crown and scepter, and the infant Jesus in her arms. The Mass is celebrated in Hungarian, German, Romanian, and every Saturday night in the Italian language.

Organ

Carl Leopold Wegenstein, who in 1896 delivered his first major organ for the St. Catherine's Church in the city of Timisoara, also received an order for the organ building for the Millennium Church in the same year. The cost of the technically advanced organ were by Bishop Alexander III. Dessewfy worn. The church and the organ were ordained in the same year.

Between 1928 and 1930, the console was further added at the request of the former church musician Paul Wittmann forward and turned over so that he could direct the choir at the same time. In 1979, the organ of Walter Kindl was restored and rebuilt, after which the disposition looks like this:
