Miller cylindrical projection

Miller cylindrical projection is a modified Mercator projection, which was proposed in 1942 by Osborn Maitland Miller. It is neither compliant nor equal area. The modification causes the distances between the lines of latitude with increasing polar regions compared to the Mercator projection grow less strongly, so that the surface distortion is reduced.

Construction

The x and y coordinates of a point on the map determined by the following equation:

Where and are the longitude and latitude of the point and the longitude of the map center, call ( angle in radians).

The latitude is thus first multiplied by the factor, then applied the Mercator projection, and finally the result is multiplied by the reciprocal of.
