Millersburg is a village in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. At the 2000 census, 3,326 people lived in the village. It is the county seat of Holmes County.

Geography

Millersburg is located at the Killbuck Creek in northeastern Ohio, in the middle of Ohio 's Amish Country, the world's largest Amish settlement area. In the resort, the State Route 39 crossing ( U.S. Route 62) and State Route 83 The capital Columbus is about 90 miles (144 kilometers) to the southwest. The county capital of Millersburg and neighboring Berlin are known as tourist centers and points of departure for visiting the Amish settlements.

History

The first settlement on the Killbuck Creek, later called Old Town, Adam Johnson and Charles Miller founded in November 1815. Difficulty in selling the land hindered the development, and thus laid on April 8, 1824 Andrew Johnston and Charles Miller a little further south the foundation for a second settlement, the New Town. 1830, the first church was built, and the population had grown to 320 people. Despite a great fire in 1844 there were in 1846 in Millersburg already 673 inhabitants, four churches and a number of shops and commercial establishments, including two newspaper publishers.

Culture and sights

The center of Millersburg has been preserved as a largely closed ensemble of residential and commercial buildings of the 19th and early 20th century, which is advertised as Historic Downtown Millersburg and performed as a National Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Publicly accessible are the court and prison building from 1884-1886, the Millersburg Glass Museum and the Victorian House Museum, the Holmes County Historical Society operates. As an institution of national importance, the Ohio Amish Library is located in Millerstown, a library and publisher of the religion and culture of the Amish.
