Milliarium Aureum

The Milliarium Aureum (Golden Milestone ) was a gilded column of bronze. It was on the orders of Augustus 20 BC on the eastern corner of the Rostra in the Roman Forum in Rome created ( Cass. Dio 54,8,4 ).

Originally stood on the column, the names of the capitals of the provinces of the Roman Empire and their respective distances from Rome. This column should people remember the size of the empire and the central nature of the forum. It was regarded as ideational center of the empire, from the leading off the main Roman roads. Only remnants of the base are preserved. Distances added together yielded 76,000 km. The emperor also had the road as a task, he was the curator viarum. Because of this column, the saying " All roads lead to Rome " was born.
