Milo, Sicily

Milo is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 1066 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Milo is located 36 km west of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in the timber trade, tourism and the cultivation of vines.

The districts are Caselle, Fornazzo and Milo.

The neighboring municipalities are Giarre, Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea.

History

The town was founded in the 14th century. By 1923, the town belonged to Giarre, then until 1955 the place Sant'Alfio. 1955 Milo became independent.

Attractions

Center of the town is the Piazza Belvedere, whose wide terrace you can overlook the whole sea to Calabria. At the Piazza stands the church of Sant'Andrea. This church was built where Giovanni d' Aragona had built a small church in 1340, which was dedicated to St. John. Below the piazza is a Parco Botanico is with playgrounds. Along the Via Etnea, far from the Palazzo Municipale and Piazza Belvedere, you can see the l' abbiviraturi ( a potions ) bestauen. These potions have been built in the 19th century from lava. The town is the starting point to visit the Etna.
