Milton Margai

Sir Milton Augustus Strieby Margai (born 7 December 1895 in Gbangbatoke, † April 28, 1964 in Freetown ) was Chief Minister of the British Protectorate of Sierra Leone, Prime Minister of the British protectorate, and the first Prime Minister of Sierra Leone.

Life

Milton Margai was born in Moyamba District and graduated from the Newcastle Medical School in the UK, before returning in 1928 to Sierra Leone. Immediately after his return, he took up a job in the administration of the Protectorate. In 1949 he founded the Sierra Leone People's Party ( SLPP ) with Siaka Stevens, won the 1951 elections. After he was chairman of the Ministry of health, agriculture and forestry, he was in 1954 appointed Chief Minister. In 1958, his brother Albert Margai placed in internal party elections against him. However, Albert Margai renounced the party presidency and founded his own party, a coalition with the SLPP came in 1960.

In the next two years Margai led the effort to draft a constitution. In 1958 he became Prime Minister. With independence on April 27, 1961 Margai was automatically first Prime Minister of independent Sierra Leone. The subsequent elections in 1962, he could win. Margai died in 1964 in Freetown. He was succeeded by his brother Albert Margai.

Review

Sir Milton Margai in Sierra Leone is regarded as a man of honor and high principles. His term will be viewed in retrospect as a time of prosperity and he is still regarded as the most important politicians of the country.
