Mimi Parent

Mimi Parent ( as Marie Parent, born September 8, 1924 in Montreal, Canada, † 14 June 2005 in Switzerland ) was a Canadian artist of Surrealism.

Early years

Marie Parent, called Mimi, was born as the eighth of nine children of the architect Lucien Parent and his wife. In the years 1942 to 1947, she completed her studies in painting at the Ecole des Beau Arts Montreal, starting in 1943 with the painter Alfred Pellan. At this school, she met the artist Jean Benoît, whom she married in 1948. In 1947, she was forcibly expelled because their works were met with the Catholic school board 's approval.

Artist

In 1948 she worked with Pellan and Benoît together in a group of artists. They took with them in exhibitions and still got awarded the Cézanne medal in the same year. She also won an annual scholarship for Paris, married her boyfriend Jean Benoît and traveled with him to France. In the 1950s she created collages and various other works, to the couple in 1959 came in contact with André Breton. Together with him, they took part in the activities of the Paris Surrealist group. In subsequent years, she and her husband took over again in various exhibitions in various cities, including 1960 in New York and in 1961 in Milan.

Mimi Parent died at the age of 80 years in Switzerland.
