Mimizan
Mimizan is a French town with 7084 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Landes department in the region of Aquitaine. It belongs to the district of Mont -de- Marsan, and is capital of the canton Mimizan. The municipality consists of the villages Mimizan -Bourg and Mimizan.
Geography
Mimizan is a commune of the Cote Landaise, situated in the Pays de Born, and is also called " the pearl of the Côte d' Argent". It is in the middle at 15 m above sea level, approximately 100 km south-west of Bordeaux on the coast. The municipality covers 114.83 km ², and thus has a population density of 58 inhabitants per km ². The district Mimizan -Plage is situated directly on the coast of the Bay of Biscay, Mimizan - Bourg is located about 4 km inland. The pine forest between the two districts became smaller and smaller over the years and the two districts grow slowly together.
History
- Mimizan the Roman city could have been Segosa.
- In the year 506 occurred in Mimizan to a battle between the Visigoths and Christians under the leadership of the Holy Galactoire, bishop of Lescar.
- In the year 982 gave the Duke of Biscay, Guillaume de Sancho, a church to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint -Sever.
- Between 1889 and 1960 there was a 34 km long railway line Labouheyre - Mimizan.
Structures
The bell tower of Notre-Dame church from the 13th century as part of the French pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela since 1998 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. From the former monastery church of the Benedictine remains are still present.
