Mimmo Paladino

Mimmo Paladino (born 18 December 1948 in Paduli, Benevento Province; actually Domenico Paladino ) is a contemporary Italian painter and object artist. Paladino is one next to Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi to the representatives of the Italian Transavantgarde (it.: Transavanguardia ).

Life and work

Mimmo Paladino was stimulated by his uncle, a painter, who early on introduced him to traditional painting techniques to art. After he had attended the 1964 Venice Biennale, he decided to become an artist. He studied from 1964 to 1968 at the Liceo Artistico painting in Benevento and experimented, influenced by Max Ernst and Paul Klee, with collages, rubbings and abstract paintings. In 1968 he finished his academic education with a diploma and began to paint freely.

Early to mid -1970s, the artist dealt almost exclusively with mythological themes, such as the myth of Icarus, which he implemented in drawings. Here Paladino developed his own significant for his later work frescoes illustrative technique in which he painted large-scale walls with pastel colors. His first exhibition was Paladino in 1977 in the "Galerie Lucio Amelio " in Naples. Several trips to Milan and the contact to the art critic Tommaso Trini and the gallerist Franco Toselli made ​​Paladino soon known throughout the region. In Tosellis Gallery 1978 he presented his first murals. In the same year he traveled to New York, where he met with Sandro Chia and Francesco Clemente. It was followed by several trips to Brazil.

In 1980, Mimmo Paladino, together with the publisher Emilio Mazzoli a book with texts by Achille Bonito Oliva out. The art critic Oliva had in the late 1970s the term Transavanguardia introduced for the style of the new, mainly of young Italian artists such as Chia, Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Paladino dominated movement, which finds parallels in the New Wild in Germany. In the same year Paladino participated in the Aperto 80 Venice Biennale and in 1982 at the Biennale of Sydney in part. In subsequent years, Paladino had exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum in Basel and at the Galleria d' Arte Moderna di Bologna. In 1999 he had an extensive retrospective at Lenbachhaus in Munich and in the same year an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Centro per l' arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato dedicated his 2002/2003 a comprehensive retrospective. Works by Mimmo Paladino can be found in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA ) in Dublin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The artist lives and works in Milan and Benevento, Italy.

Work

Mimmo Paladino's work is often vorskizzierte with crayon mixed media on paper or wood, which he uses all the traditional means. His oeuvre includes watercolor, oil painting, tempera and collage, frottage, engraving, drypoint etchings and woodcuts. Paladino images are often untitled.
