Minamoto no Sanetomo

Minamoto no Sanetomo (Japanese源 実 朝; * February 17, 1192, † February 13, 1219 ) was the third shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, Udaijin ( 1218-1219 ) and a waka poet.

Life

The son of the founder of Kamukara Shogunate, Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hōjō Masokos was at the age of eleven years Shōgun succeeded his murdered brother Minamoto no Yoriie. However, the real power in the kingdom was at that time in the hands of his grandfather Hōjō Tokimasa.

Minamoto, was murdered by his nephew Kugyo Minamoto no Yoshinari, a son of his brother Minamoto no Yoriie.

Poetry

Minamoto no Sanetomo dealt with poetry and became a student of the poet Fujiwara no Teika. His poems ( about 700 ) were from an unknown compiler in the Kinkei Wakashū Collection (金槐 和 歌集) together. One was also included in the collection Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
