Mineo

Mineo is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 5163 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Mineo is located 66 km southwest of Catania. The inhabitants work mainly on agriculture, animal husbandry and the furniture industry.

The neighboring municipalities are Aidone (EN), Caltagirone, Gram Michele, Licodia Euboea, Militello in Val di Catania, Palagonia, Piazza Armerina (EN), Ramacca and Vizzini.

History

The church dates from the 5th century BC to the Arab era the church was a fortress.

Attractions

The church Sant'Agrippina originates from the 14th century, the interior dates from the 18th century. Inside there is a crib that dates from the 18th century. The San Pietro church was built in the 17th century. Inside is a Christusfirgur of wood. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is originally from the 11th century, was reconstructed in the 18th century. Inside there is a organ from the 18th century.

  • The Sikelerführer Ducetius, the BC lead a rebellion against the Greeks in the 5th century, came from Mineo.
  • The writer Luigi Capuana was born on 28 May 1839 in Mineo and died on November 29, 1925 in Catania. He was a representative of the Italian verismo. In Mineo can be visited his birthplace.
  • The writer Giuseppe Bonaviri was born on July 11, 1924 in Mineo; on March 21, 2009, he died in Frosinone ( Lazio ). In 2000 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • Alois Ricceri, SDB, Italian Luigi was born on 8 May 1901 in Mineo, and died June 15, 1989 in Castellammare di Stabia. He was an Italian Salesian of Don Bosco and 1965-1977, the seventh Superior General of the Congregation and thus sixth successor of Don Bosco.
