Mineral County (West Virginia)

Mineral County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Keyser.

Geography

The County is located in the northeast of West Virginia, is bordered on the north and north- west by Maryland and covers an area of ​​852 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Allegany County ( Maryland), Hampshire County, Grant County and Garrett County ( Maryland).

History

Mineral County was formed on February 1, from parts of Hampshire County. It was named after the rich iron ore deposits in this area. 1669 was John Lederer, a German physician and explorer of the Appalachian Mountains, permission to enter by Sir William Berkeley the area now Mineral County, which he, among other areas, explored from there.
