Origin and History

The breed originated directly from the Australian Shepherd, actually even in parallel. Throughout the history of Australian Shepherds you will always find small (under 18 " / 45cm ) Dogs in documents and in photographs. The livestock holding or breeding farmers preferred a larger dog for their larger cattle. However, some owners and breeders wanted to continue the smaller Australian Shepherd.

In 1968, the "Little Aussies " by Doris Cordova were rediscovered in Norco in the U.S. state of California. Doris Cordova 's most famous dog Cordova 's Spike was passed on to Bill and Sally Kennedy to develop the breeding line. At this time, Chas Lasater of Valhalla Kennels also started to breed Miniature Australian Shepherds. Cordova, Lasater and the Kennedy jointly founded the first club of the breed.

Since the 80s, the dogs can be detected at the National Stock Dog registry. For about ten years, there are two special registers for Miniature Australian Shepherds:

  • Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA - MASCUSA
  • The Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of America - MASCA

Since 2005 exists in Germany, the club first Mini Australian Shepherd Club of Germany, in which these dogs are bred. Currently, awarded by the association breeding documents are still recognized elsewhere in the FCI neither the VDH.

In May 2011, the AKC has taken the race under the name of Miniature American Shepherd with a view to future appreciation in its Foundation Stock Service. The North American Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of the USA ( NAMASCUSA ) named in the context of inclusion in Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA has to offer.
