Ministry of Health (Italy)

The Italian Ministry of Health (Italian Ministero della Salute ) is one of the ministries of the Italian Government. The Ministry in Rome two service offices: The political leadership is located on the right bank of the Tiber Lungotevere Ripa, opposite the Tiber island, the ministerial administration has its seat in the European district. Acting Health Minister is Beatrice Lorenzin.

Tasks

The Italian health system consists primarily of the National Health Service ( Servizio Sanitario Nazionale ). Although the name suggests a national organization, almost exclusively, the Italian regions are responsible in this area. The Ministry accepts basic tasks such as the national health planning and coordinating tasks. In its remit the Ministry Italy represents at international and European level, in particular with the World Health Organization and the European Medicines Agency.

Organization

The political leadership consists of the ministers and secretaries of state of one or two. The latter are in Italy No officials but politicians. Below the political leadership, the Ministry is divided since 2012 into three main departments ( dipartimenti ), who are responsible for policy matters and innovations in health care, the National Health Service as well as for veterinary and food security. Peripheral services are mainly located at ports and airports, where they are intended to prevent in particular the introduction of certain diseases. The Ministry is a detail of the Carabinieri assigned, which is watching and pursuing criminal active in the areas of consumer protection and health care. The Ministry oversees the Italian Red Cross and various authorities (including Drug ) and institutes. The division has also a number of scientific advisory boards.

History

From 1861 to 1958, the Interior Ministry was responsible for the health. The Health Department of the Ministry were under the health authorities at the level of provinces and municipalities as well as some other special services. 1945 Panel on Basic Issues of health care was established at the Council of Ministers Presidium. From this body and parts of the Home Office was established in 1958, the " Medical Ministry " ( Ministero della Sanità ). With the health care reform of 1978, the "National Medical Service " was introduced at its head stood the medical ministry. With the gradual transfer of many powers to the regions the Ministry essentially remained only principle and coordination tasks. A reform of the Italian government bureaucracy ( Rifoma Bassanini ) 1999 saw the merger of the Ministry with the front for Labour and Social Affairs. 2001 emerged as the Ministry of Health again, 2008, the two ministries were merged again in 2009 then split.
